Nine months old - the countdown begins

Today the boys had their nine month appointment. We've really had quite a rough start to 2010 and so their appointment just added to the chaos. To start with - on New Years Day, Graham was acting really wimpy and crying a whole bunch. After snuggling with him I realized that he was really warm and so we took his temperature. It was 100.8 :( So we gave him some Tylenol and put him off to bed (only an hour after he had woken up from his morning nap). He then proceeded to sleep for THREE HOURS. Yes something was most definitely wrong. We took his temperature when he woke up and his fever seemed to be dropping and he seemed a lot better. Unfortunately later that night, wimpy whiny Graham came back and so we took his temperature again. 101.6. So more Tylenol, gave him his bottle and when Clint went to put him into his crib - Graham barfed all over. Of course it was 830 at night on a holiday so the only place we could take him was the ER. I took him (because I am MUCH more patient than Clint) while Clint stayed home with Killian who was wondering what the heck was going on (the whole barf clean-up was complete chaos).

After spending two hours at the ER, and Graham falling asleep and waking up several times, they concluded that he had an upper respiratory infection. They prescribed some Motrin for his fever and we went home and off to bed. The next few days wimpy whiny Graham continued, as did the fever and sleeping a whole bunch. Finally, on Tuesday, the fever seemed to be gone and Graham would have spurts of happy and fun Graham. But I also noticed that this whole week his appetite has dropped, he's developed a cough, he's super congested and he's been rubbing his right ear. Flash forward to this morning at our nine month appointment where the doctor told me that yes indeed he look pathetic and wimpy. His right ear had some fluid in it so she thinks his URI is turning into an ear infection. Great. So now we'll be getting him some antibiotics and a whole bunch of TLC. Poor little dude is so completely miserable - our hearts just break looking at him.

As for his check up - everything was looking good developmentally and physically except for his weight. On Friday night at the ER they weighed him and he was 19 pounds 12 ounces and yet just four and a half days later, he dropped 3/4ths of a pound and is now only 18 pounds 15 ounces. This puts him in the 20th percentile. So for now we're keeping him on the high-calorie preemie formula in hopes that he'll increase his weight. His height on the other hand was 28 1/2 inches which puts him in the 60th percentile. Yippee.

As for Killian. Well he's doing just awesome. He was 20 pounds and 3 ounces which is in the 45th percentile and his height was 29 inches which put him in the 75th percentile. He is a big boy. He's such a happy boy too - really the best baby you could ask for.

They are both doing amazing things. They army crawl everywhere and are both really good about crawling on their hands and knees on the carpet, but slip a little bit on the wood floors. They both have their bottom two teeth and have been doing a great job with finger foods. They eat Cheerios, oranges, bananas, peaches, pears, broccoli, Gerber Puffs. We're going to try out some pasta and carrot this week as well. They have been taking baths together in the big boy bathtub for a few weeks now and love it. Killian is a big splasher while Graham likes to play with the toys. Graham has learned how to pull to standing while Killian does great with getting into a sitting position. They both sit very well on their own for long periods of time. I really feel like the sitting thing just happened over night.

Both of their first words were Ma-Ma and they both now say Da-Da and Killian also says Ba-Ba. They love to explore, play with shoes, find anything that's bad (like hairballs from Batman) and put them into their mouth. They sat in the front of the grocery cart the other day for the very first time - the store by our house has carts made for two kids! They both take two naps a day and sleep about twelve hours a night. I think Clint and I have become really good parents these last few months. It's kind of sad for us to see that the countdown to their first birthday has begun. Less than three months to go and our baby boys will be one year old little dudes. We're not planning on having a party but we're thinking about taking them to Sea World the weekend before their birthday. They really love animals and are so observant of everything around them. I cannot wait to see what these next three months brings our little family. Let's just hope that whatever they bring, it's better than this first week has been ;)
