Well this morning we had the boys' four month appointment and it went GREAT!!! First thing I have to say is we just cannot believe how the time has flown by. I still remember the days that they spent in the NICU, and how Clint and I would pack up and go down to the hospital every night for three or four hours to feed them, change them, and just love on them. I mean, when they were born they had no body fat, just extra folds of skin. They were TINY - though they were the biggest babies in the NICU. Now they are our little fat faces.
Let's start with Graham (since he is the oldest). Nine weeks ago we had their two month appointment and they were nine weeks old. Graham was weighing in at 10 pounds 2 ounces and measuring 22 inches! Well, nine weeks later at 18 weeks old, he is weighing 14 pounds even and measuring 25 inches. That's a weight gain of three pounds and 14 ounces and a length gain of three inches in just nine weeks! What's even better is that they are OFF the preemie percentile chart (though they will always be considered preemies). This is super exciting because now they are being charted as "regular" babies. His weight was in the 45th percentile of babies his age and his height was in the 50th percentile.
Killian is doing just as well. Again, nine weeks ago at nine weeks old he was weighing in at 9 pounds 14 ounces and measuring at 22 inches. That's just 4 ounces lighter than his brother. Well today, at eighteen weeks old, he was weighing 13 pounds and 15.6 ounces and measuring in at 25 inches. That's just .4 ounces lighter than Graham. So even though my little chunklin looks heavier, he is actually a wee bit lighter. BUT - he did gain more weight than his brother. His weight is in the 45th percentile and his height in the 50th percentile.
Now about their heads . . . we've always said that Killian had a fat head but their heads have always measured the same. Well, it's basically the same again. Graham's head is 41 centimeters while Killian's is only slightly bigger at 42 centimeters. Maybe it's that extra hair that Killian has been growing :)
So the boys are definitely growing up. They've both started rolling over, though they do it in different ways. Graham lifts his head and chest and pushes himself over while Killian keeps his head on the ground and pushes with his legs. They both talk a lot and are laughing and smiling all the time. We've started putting them in a Bumpo so they can practice sitting, and even putting them in their jumperoos so that they can work on their leg muscles.
Killian still has his reflux and Graham has a bit of thrush (something we can get rid of with a prescription). We still need to help Killian work on his neck muscles but other than that, Dr. Sperling is so proud of them. As exciting as it is to see them doing so well and all the new things they are doing, it's sad to see them grow so fast. We've been putting them back into their bassinets at night, which they are still getting used to, and at six months we'll start putting them in their cribs. We've even moved onto the bigger bottles because they are drinking between four and five ounces and are starting to go longer without eating. That's exciting for me because it's hard work taking care of them by myself during the day. Of course, Killian has become a drool monster and just soaking his shirts during the day, which does create a little bit more laundry.
Graham's colic is almost gone, though he HATES going to sleep at night. He is just very high maintenance while Killian is such a relaxed angel baby. As for the new school year, well, it looks like I'll be staying home with the boys. No school districts are really hiring right now and child care for two infants is super expensive. We are thinking that I'll sub two days a week while Clint stays home those days, or closes, and then this way I'll still bring in a tiny bit of money while we won't have to pay for childcare.
While that's about it for this blog update. Hopefully this week I'll be able to finally write a blog about our California trip - as you all know I've been going nonstop since the end of June and just haven't had the time to sit down and write one. So keep an eye out for that this week!
